2018 Montesquieu Democracy Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Painstakingly sourced from the highest organically farmed vineyard parcels in the majestic Spring Mountain AVA, the 2018 Democracy is a stirring expression of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep crimson in color, the Democracy’s nose is a Bordeaux-like perfume of cherry skins and violets with hints of dried sage and spice. Rich flavors of red currant and licorice mingle on the palate with hints of smoky herbs and tobacco, all packaged with a smooth mouthfeel and effortless tannin structure. The finish retains the palate’s elegance and balance and offers fine hints of damp earth and mocha. The ideal food pairing wine, particularly with grilled meats.
2017 Gaita Santa Barbara County Tempranillo
A chef's dream, with endless food pairing possibilities. 100% Tempranillo from the Los Alamos Valley in Santa Barbara County. The cooler climate is just perfect for the grape, allowing it to harvest late with tons of rich velvety fruit, complexity galore, and a silky polished tannin structure, the perfect combination!
As soon as you pour it the super deep purple color tells you this a big, bold expression of Tempranillo. The nose is amazing, all kinds of sweet black cherry jam, vanilla, and cigar box, together with hints of new leather and smoky herbs as the wine opens up. The palate grabs you with a rich luscious mouthfeel and gobs of spicy blackberry beautifully framed by hints of vanilla and oak. The finish stays rich and juicy and the smooth, polished tannin is submerged under more decadent flavors of dried fig and cherry skins. The big flavors are 100% California but the complexity and balance definitely speak to the classic beauty of Tempranillo.
2017 Viaggio Sangiovese Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Viaggio is Italian for journey. This 100% Sangiovese from a vineyard site just north of Tuscany, is a classic expression of the country's most venerable red varietal. Soft crimson in color, the nose offers an abundance of peppered strawberry, roses, and vanilla, all with a hint of smoke and grilled meat. The palate is full-flavored with savory flavors of plum, bing cherry and classic notes of black pepper and dusty earth. The Viaggio's finish is long and persistent thanks to the grape's naturally high acidity and smooth tannin, a style that promotes drinking this wine now and over the next 5-7 years. Lovely on its own, it is best served alongside grilled steaks, roasted pork, or any classic Italian pasta dish with a hearty tomato sauce.
2014 Nelkarisi Saperavi Kekhati, Georgia
It is our distinct pleasure to once again offer the wines of Nelkarisi from the Republic of Georgia. Georgia is the cradle of wine civilization with a production history traced all the way back to 6000 BC. With the fall of the Soviet Union the Iron Curtain was drawn back to reveal a nation eager to share its proud wine history globally and reestablish itself in the wine world with an influx of western investment. Nelkarisi was formally established in 2009 by a group of eleven international friends with a deep passion for authentic Georgian wine. No expense has been spared in the development of the winery and its vineyards, and Nelkarisi is committed to producing its wine using only traditional methods and varietals. We look forward to your enjoyment of these wines. Saperavi is the premiere red grape from Georgia and carries a powerful opaque color thanks to its dark skin and juice. The nose reveals damp, mossy notes of earth and leather together with blackberry and cassis. The body seduces with ripe black cherry flavors and a layered velvety mouthfeel, reminiscent of a fine Red Burgundy with its bold and complex yet totally effortless style. The finish delivers a polished, elegant tannin and subtle nuances of rose, blackberry and spice. Best served alongside grilled red meats, the wine pairs particularly well with lamb or venison. Approachable today, the wine should evolve nicely over the next 10-12 years.
